Adenosine A3 Receptor/ADORA3 Background Information

Adenosine A3 receptor (A3AR) is a Gi-protein-coupled receptor that, when being activated, decreases intracellular cAMP levels. The A3AR gene contains 2 exons that are separated by a single intron of approximately 2.2 kb, located on human chromosome 1p21-p13. There is extensive evidence for the involvement of A3AR in a number of pathophysiological processes including ischemic conditions of the central nervous system and heart and inflammatory states, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Crohn's disease, and tumors. Therefore, A3AR is an important target for a number of inflammatory, neoplastic, and neurodegenerative conditions.
