    지질대사 Background

Lipid metabolism refers to the processes that involve the degradation and synthesis of lipids. Lipid metabolism includes the metabolism of triacylglycerols, fatty acids, steroid, cholesterols, sphingolipids, phospholipids, and glycolipids. Lipid biosynthesis involves the synthesis of fatty acids from acetyl-CoA and the esterification of fatty acids in the production of triacylglycerol, a process called lipogenesis. Triacylglycerol synthesis takes place in the endoplasmic reticulum by metabolic pathways in which acyl groups in fatty acyl-CoAs are transferred to the hydroxyl groups of glycerol-3-phosphate and diacylglycerol. Triacylglycerols are packaged in lipoproteins and secreted from the liver. Degradation of lipids is the metabolic process by which triglycerides are hydrolyzed into free fatty acids, followed by further degradation, into acetyl units, by beta oxidation.
