Pandemic Influenza Virus Background
Pandemic influenza is caused by new emerging influenza viruses that are originated from animal origin and are new to the human immune systems, meaning human does not have the pre-existing immunity to the new pandemic viruses. Pandemic influenza can cause server economic and social damages. This was evidenced by the 1918 Spanish pandemic influenza.
The 2009 swine H1N1 influenza virus has caused more than 100 million infections worldwide and has resulted in more than 6000 human death. Avian influenza H5N1 has also caused hundreds of human death through sporadic infection spreading from animal to human. It is feared that once the avian H5N1 influenza virus gains its capability to transmit from human-to-human, its over 60% fatality rate could cause unprecedented damages to the mankind. As a result, vaccine development for avian H5N1 influenza and anti-influenza virus has become hot subjects for research.
Influenza virus hemagglutinin protein plays essential role in virus infection and entry into host cells, and hence it is a major target for pandemic influenza viral vaccine research and anti-influenza viral drug development.
