    Growth Differentiation Factor (GDF) Background

Growth differentiation factors (GDFs) are a group of proteins that are best known for their functions in development. GDFs are widely expressed in multiple tissues to regulate embryonic development, apoptosis, iron metabolism, inflammation, and many other processes. Growth differentiation factor family are a subfamily of TGF-beta superfamily, and some GDFs are closely related to BMPs. Members of this subfamily have since been named GDF1 through GDF15.
