The uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is an integral protein of the inner mitochondrial membrane. UCP1 is certainly a unique mitochondrial transporter able to uncouple respiration from ADP phosphorylation in mitochondria. UCP1 activity is protective against body fat accumulation. In other words, UCP1 short-circuits the electron transport chain, allowing mitochondrial membrane potential to be transduced to heat, making brown adipose tissue (BAT) a tissue capable of altering energy expenditure and fuel metabolism in mammals without increasing physical activity.
