By use of the murine cDNA of the recently cloned murine leukemia-inhibitory factor (LIF) gene as a hybridization probe, Gough et al. (1988) isolated the human homolog from a genomic library. The nucleotide sequence of the human gene indicated 78% sequence identity with murine LIF, with no insertions or deletions. Williams et al. (1988) proposed that LIF is identical to a differentiation inhibitory activity (DIA) in embryonic stem (ES) cells.
